The Dolomites 10 days walking
Walking in Italy, the ring of Cortina.

ITINERARY - difficulty grade B ( height gains of up to 800m, 2,700 ft a day )

Meet in Milan or Venice:
Pick-up is arranged around noon at Venice or Milan (airports). A 5 hour drive takes us to VENICE and then north to CORTINA, where a cosy hotel will help us get comfortably settled. Orientation meeting for our walking in the Dolomites, and a succulent welcome dinner.

Our hotel base is the comfortable Hotel Menardi, CORTINA D'AMPEZZO, Italy.
Day 2:

Tre Cima di Lavardo - Sennes Hut :
A morning drive from Cortina along a very scenic road via Lake Misurina takes us to a belvedere at the foot of the amazing Tre Cime di Lavarado, three vertical rock faces overlooking a great panorama. A short walk.
After lunch we transfer to the trail head to start our hike up to the Senes Hut perched high in the alpine meadows of the nature park. Optional climb of an easy summit. (4hrs walking)
Overnight and dinner at the charming Sennes Hut.

Braies Nature Park - Fanes Hut :
We wake up and the marmots are already playing around in the fields ready to be photographed. A good trail reaches a lower hut where flowers abound then a military road carved in the mountain takes us to the river. Cows and hikers are everywhere but we will find a quiet spot for lunch. It is only a short climb to the the Fanes mountain Inn located in a very beautiful cirque; comfortable rooms and tasty mountain food. Optional hike in the afternoon to reach another easy summit. (6hrs walking)

Day 4:

The Land of the Ladine :
A range of valleys, isolated for centuries, this area has garded a strong cultural identity with a mix of Roman and German influence, and it's own language - Ladine. A superb hike in the high country through a wide valley and an unusual pass leads to a pretty mountain lake for lunch. A long downhill takes us to our bus to transfer to San Cassiano, a charming village. (6hrs walking)

Day 5:

Nuvolau 2575m, 5900ft :
Transfer to the Falzarego Pass and we will be walking in the clouds as we reach the summit of Nuvolau. Nuvolau at 2575m, 5900ft offers beautiful views of all the dolomites including Tofane, Cristallo and Marmolada. A 360deg truly spectacular viewpoint over the Dolomites. (6 hrs walking)

OPTION: For those wishing for a little more adventure we can take the mountain trail to Passo Giau which consists of two Via Ferratta ( iron way ) sections where we hold on to steel bars and walk down steep ladders. A truly exciting experience and definitely one of the moments which makes for a real Adventure.

Tonight's home is a mountain lodge set at Giau Pass, 2236m, 5100ft - Albergo Passo Giau

Day 6:

Mondeval Man :
Mondeval for a long time was only known to the locals as a good pasture area until tools and remains of a Neolithic settlement were excavated a decade ago. The setting is so extraordinary it is easy to understand why people long ago had chosen it. Nature is at its best here with plenty of water and green grass, horses and cattle.
In the afternoon we descend to San Vito from where we’ll be picked up by the van for a short transfer back to Cortina and a restful night in town. (5hrs walking) .

Day 7:

Rest day :
A rest day from walking in the Dolomites. We can take cable cars for a spectacular ride to the summit of Tofana di Mezzo (3244m, 7400ft)

Day 8:

Italy

The Forcella Grande, 2255m, 5100ft :
It is only one hour uphill to reach the pass of Forcella Grande opening to a deep valley and offering a wonderful panorama in all directions.
Then we hike west and downhill for the rest of the day in one of the best valleys in the area. The track offers waterfalls, rock towers and forests all the way to the valley where our bus will pick us up and drive along a scenic route to Cortina. (6hrs walking)

Day 9:

Forcella di Mezzo, 2237m, 5,000ft :
Today’s hike is a fitting end to our walking in the Dolomites. A short transfer to the Lago di Lanaro where our hike begins. We begin walking up the Valle della Rienza to the Valle di Rinbon. We leave the green slopes and turn right into the Pian di Rin for our spectacular last high pass of the trek. The Forcela di Mezzo puts us right next the Tre Cima - some the most photographed Dolomite mountains.
At the base of these spectacular summits we meet our minibus and transfer back to Cortina for our farewell meal. (6hrs walking)

Day 10:

Travel day :
An end to our walking holiday in Italy, until the next time;
transfer to Venice railway station or airport or Milan or Innsbruck or ... .

A single-room supplement is readily available if you prefer.

What is included:
Inclusive of everything, i.e. airport transfers, bed and breakfast (nights 1-9 inc), big picnic lunches (days 2-9), all cable cars and lifts, minibus transport and 2 guides.

What is NOT included:
Insurance, alcoholic drinks and your postcards and obvious personal spending, including medical supplies. Lunches on travel days (days 1 and 10).
